A Visit to Red Light Area of New Delhi - GB Road.

G B Road - The red light area of New Delhi.
It was in the month of May around 5 - 6 yrs back on Saturday, my friend called me on my mobile and we were just having a casual talk as suddenly he came up with an idea of spending a night at the famous Red Light Area of Delhi. "Dont worry Sam (Name Changed), I know that you are a first timer but i have been there once so no problem and no need to feel nervous." said my friend Raju (name changed). He was in a mood to have some fun so he planned it. I, like any other guy of my age thought to give it a try as I had never been there before inside. But I had passed through the road 2 to 3 times. One of my good friend once took me for the first time to show the area during day time. We hired a rickshaw and started our tour. As we where passing through the G B Road the sex workers were calling us to come up. It's a common sight that these sex workers from the windows of their kothas look at the people who pass on through the road and also give a friendly smile. They were calling us with different names like "Chikne", "Ladke", "Oye upar aaja". We could see a bunch of rickshaw pullers standing and staring at the women up on the floors as if they were watching a movie sitting in a front row, their face held up. We could also see the brokers persuading to come with them, and with the promise that they will provide with a nice girl. We took a u turn from there and then reached the place from where we had hired the rickshaw thus ending our "voyage"

Ok so continuing with the story, as me and my friend Raju was planning to go there I also got some what excited about spending night in a brothel with a beautiful prostitute but also got some what nervous also because it was going to be my first encounter in a Red Light Area and other fears regarding police, HIV infection etc.. "Aaj raat ka plan banate hain, pakka" said Raju. I said "theeke yaar, chalte hain". It was around 8:40 PM and we headed towards PVR Priya red light, the point from where we boarded the Route No. 604 bus which directly goes to the New Delhi terminal (ajmeri gate side). We boarded off the bus and we were there by 9:50 PM. We walked towards G.B.Road and saw the kothas which looked quite old fashioned from outside. There are shops beneath the kothas and a narrow staricase leads to the first floor and other floors where these Kothas are situated.Raju and I were discussing which Kotha to visit. There are around 200 kothas in G B Road.

I told Raju "Kotha No. 64 bada famous hai yaar, wahan kaafi bheed lagi rahti hai aur wahan ki ladkiyan safai se rahti hain". Yes among some of the men the common perception is that 64 number kotha is good as it houses clean, beautiful girls and women. Raju and I went upstairs in Kotha No. 64. We had just climbed the first floor and saw many young boys were there waiting for their girl and getting a room for the "play". We entered a room which was average in area and there were a lot of women and young girls and a bunch of sexually frustrated customers talking with the prostitutes". Inside the room there were women and girls, some of them wearing sarees exposing there sexuality. The room was quite humid and the safai wala was cleaning the place which was full of water flowing ankle deep and seemed like there was some flood in the room. As we started out looking for our "partners" some girls came towards both of us and persuaded us to come with them. They whispered in our ears "Aaja Aaja". We asked the charges and they told "500 lagega" some told "600 lagega".

My friend chose a girl and told me " Main isko le ja raha hun, tu bhi chunle jaldi". I also chose a girl and negotitated an amount of Rs. 550. The chowkidaar of the kotha then closed the door as no more customers were allowed inside.Raju said to me Good Night and went with his girl and the girl with me took inside a room which had a staircase heading towards another small area. That small so called room had a table fan inside it and it's walls were having posters of Hindi Cinema actors and actresses. The floor as well as the wall were all wooden in material. She said "sahab mein abhi aati hun nahake". My friend came and told me that his girl has also gone for bath. We were just having some talk then my girl came up and asked whether we would like to eat dinner. I told her no. After that my friend got back to his room and I started talking with my girl. I asked her name. She smiled and said "Sahab naam na pucho". I asked why? She did'nt say anything. I then asked from where did u came here and how did u got entangled over here. "Mein Nepal se hoon". She said.

She declined to comment further as she feared that I might tell someone. She then asked me whether I was on and I told her yes. She asked me whether I was having a condom otherwise she could provide me with one. I told her that I have. After some time we had a casual talk. The conditions in which these people survive are really pathetic. With dingy rooms, little space and unclean toilets, it is very difficult for them to live there. But it's there compulsion out of poverty or due to some other reasons. Some of the girls and women are sold off by their family members for money to someone who is greedy and brings them over here and others being duped of someone pretending to be a good samaritan and taking to them in confidence that we will help you in getting a job and when they come they are sold off.The room downstairs was quite big and it had some women sleeping on the floors and in a part of wall, pictures of Hindu Gods were being kept.

The girl with me then went back to her room and then after some time my friend came and we started talking about our time spent. As the time was passing it was going to be morning and it was getting hot over there. We planned to move out . As we reached over the door it was found to be closed so we called the chowkidaar and asked him to open it. As we stepped out of the room and going downstairs through the narrow passage there was a room which had some "customers" sitting over there and having a chat with their partners. I saw a person who was quite fat wearing a half vest and a lungi holding a glass of Whisky or beer (I don't remember, but it was alcohol) talking with a prostitute in a light mood.

The time was between 5 - 6 AM on Sunday morning. As we were stepping down my friend cautioned me about Police. "Police ka dar hai, kahin woh hame pakadle". It was so because the prostitution taking place over there is illegal. At present I don't know what is its legal status. But anyhow we had to get out because we have to reach our homes. As we got out nobody was there. The road was looking completely deserted and it was raining slightly. The weather was pleasant and the smell of morning freshness and clean air made us feel good. I saw the railway lines just opposite the kothas on the other side of the road which was going towards New Delhi Rly Stn. But as we had no proper sleep we were feeling quite tired. We walked till the Ajmeri Gate and boarded a bus towards our place. On that day I had several thoughts clouding my mind : -1. May be I may have contracted some sexual infection.2. I was not in a mood to see any normal girl face to face.3. I may have done something wrong. That day I was not in a mood to enter my home. I don't know what had happened to me. From that day onwards till some months I felt quite tense and not feeling to see any normal girl and talk to her because some kind of embarassing feeling of visitng a prostitute was going inside my mind and also the fear of contracting some infection.

Really going to G B Road had a great psychological impact on my mind.As I was telling these things to my friend he told me "yaar pehli baar aisi feelings aati hain, tension mat le, kuch nahi hoga. Jab mein pehli bar gaya tha mujhe bhi aisi feelings aayi thi".Yes, he may be true because When I told this to my another friend Arun, he told me that when he first visited the Kotha he was not in the "mood" as the place is not meant for casual sex. It is just a place for venting out immediately your sexual frustration. The prostitutes will not obey your certain sexual demands like postures and other things. Those women have so many customers on a day that they don't get personal with anyone. The laugh and the gestures as they show when you enter over there are a way of attracting customers. And the place is also not hygenic that much that a person from a middle or well to do background would like to.And seriously you will not get such affection and compassion over there because for you they are just a means for sexual gratification and for them you are just another "customer".One thing that I learned from this visit is that I would never go inside any G B Road kotha again though I feel very sorry for the plight of sexual workers living and working over there to earn their bread and butter. The Government should look after them and help them in their rehabilitation so that they can take up a much better livelihood.

The place is not safe as there are reports that some local goons and dalals (men who broker between the "client" and the prostitute) try and forcibly take money from the "client". I also read in the newspaper some days back that the sex workers are trying their hand in learning the English language and soft skills training to be presentable to the foreign visitors who may visit the brothel as a large number of foreign tourists are expected to visit during the commonwealth games in October.

And one more thing before I stop writing I would like to add one more point. In G B Road there are many sex workers belonging to different parts of the country and no matter whether they belong to different castes or communities or different religious backgrounds or speak different languages but they have one superb quality and that is that they live in harmony and peace and help each other in good and bad times and carry on with their lives, all under one roof, a lesson that could be learnt by some of our selfish, characterless and unpatriotic politicians and people who are always looking for an opportunity to aggravate violence and divide the people on the basis of caste, community or religion engage them in bloody violence so that these so called leaders of country could satisfy their selfish political ambitions and fill in their votebanks.

  8. Hey Bro,
I totally agree with you,coz i also been to kotha once, the those people are living like a family there and they try to help each other in any condition even when they try to share their owner(for night only) to help other to get some money...
Hat's off to them and you too...
I think all these are suffering by a special disease called politics....
I would like to ask our govt. please look at them and try to help them..instead of filling of your already filled lockers....

  9. Although I too sympathize with your view and appreciate your sentiments, I also have to accuse you of some sort of hypocrisy - you screwed a whore in a dirty brothel, thus perpetuating the horrible lifestyle and the prostitute business there automatically. Yes you have more of a heart and empathy than the usual customers that visit these areas, Yes if everyone felt just a slight bit like you, the world might be a better place; BUT you didnt really do anything then and there to alleviate the situation, and I am sure you wont do anything in future about it either. All I am saying is anyone can write a blog about sympathy and regard for human life, respect for women etc. etc., but it is only worth it when your Actions actually bring some change; that woman you slept with is still probably living her sex slave life, nothings changed, so dont feel like you deserve a pat on the back or the Bharat Ratna for having some nice feelings/emotions.....

you are just as apathetic as the rest of us, hell I would say a regular customer at least gives the whore an income, you just used her sad life to blog your two bits. Bravo!
